i really could write an essay on how shit is that we’ve completely abandoned the monster-of-the-week episode format even when rebooting shows that relied on it to replace them with grimdark edgy plotlines where nothing feels good or accomplished at the end of the day

#EXACTLY #WHY DO PEOPLE HATE MONSTER OF THE WEEK?#IT’S MY FAVORITE STORYTELLING FORMAT#IT’S THE MOST CHARACTER DRIVEN FORMAT WHEN DONE PROPERLY IMO#the best monster of the week episodes show us something new about the characters

sixth-light

Murder mysteries endure as a show style because they are a very specific application of the monster-of-the-week format.

siderealscribblings

Monster of the Week requires a lot of creativity and character focus; two things that seem to be lacking in big ticket shows lately in favor of Mystery Box style storylines that keep teasing a payoff that can never live up to the hype

Do NOT get me started on how many shows I would otherwise love dearly, if they didn’t get crushed under the weight of their own stupid overarching mythology!

Damn it, I loved the X-Files as a Monster of the Week show. Before the bloated conspiracies.

Crushing a show with its own overarching mythology became such a thing that now it throttles shows in their infancy. Yes, DisneyPlus I am looking at you!

When did it become uncool to just enjoy episodic things one bit at a time???

madgastronomer

When we started collecting tv shows on videos and DVDs. Seriously. And now we can binge-watch on streaming services, and in fact it’s a normal way to consume shows. So writers and showrunners feel they have to keep a greater continuity. Because the downside of super episodic shows was that they were often contradictory, because most people couldn’t easily track story elements past a few episodes (witness ST:TOS and OS Doctor Who). X-Files was unusual for its time in that it had such a strong, overarching mythology, but part of the problem with it is that the mythology itself is contradictory and tangled, because they were barely into the collections era, and didn’t expect X-Files to get that treatment when they started.

points to a sign that says “sometimes two people from the same marginalized community will want/need two very different things from their representation in fiction and they should both be allowed to find and make that representation to suit their own needs and neither should be criticized for not making the representation that the other wants”

like, for example, if one trans person is dealing with hostility from their family and their own internalized transphobia and they’re comforted by seeing a trans character face those same things, then that’s fine and they should be allowed to. if another trans person finds those kinds of stories bleak and disheartening and would prefer to see a trans character with caring loved ones and who takes pride in their identity, then that’s also fine and they should be allowed to. neither of them is doing the other any harm by looking for or making the content they personally want to see.

“why would you ever want to portray queerphobia in your fantasy, that’s so shitty, ugh”

because I am queer and I want to and you don’t get to tell me I can’t use my own experiences in my own goddamn writing

"this ship is straight coded" sure is a biphobic way of saying "these characters are very clearly bisexual, but not in a biphobe-approved way."

morganoperandi

I’m sorry, I temporarily forgot there was a non-literal usage of the word “ship” and, while I couldn’t understand how a sailing ship could be straight coded, I was 100% willing to accept this as an opinion one would see on Tumblr.com.

As an expert on the Fitzgerald I can tell you that it's 100% queer.
